By March 2, 2023March 6th, 2023Blog

The R Consortium is happy to announce and help promote the Data Science project for French-speaking Women in Africa. This program begins on March 6th, 2023, and will be led by Dr. Bernice Bancole, honorary Plant pathology researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Thierry Warin, Ph.D., Professor of Data Science for International Business HEC Montréal.

Dr. Thierry Warin, Ph.D. is Professor of Data Science for International Business HEC Montréal.

Dr. Bernice Bancole is an Honorary Plant Pathology Researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The Data Science Program will be consisting of 100 students, the program will be split into 3 semesters of course projects and an additional semester of internship for students to gain applicable experience. These students will have the opportunity to learn how to program in R, and use RMarkdown, among other tools.

The instructors will be using an experiential approach, oriented toward problem-solving. Students work in teams of three to five people. Each team will identify a societal problem. They will then propose a project that makes it possible to respond to this problem or to a dimension of this problem. This is to start with a simple solution. Then, students learn the fundamentals of programming, learning some basic data analysis patterns. They also learn Markdown programming in order to present their solution in the form of a dynamic report.

The program will follow the listed lesson program:

  • Lesson 1. The fundamentals of R
  • Lesson 2. Statistics with R
  • Lesson 3. Machine Learning with R
  • Final Project

Dr. Bernice Bancole and Professor Thierry Warin hope to continue this program for another round of 100 students. Stay tuned for more updates!
